This year’s New York State Fair featured a new exhibit in the Center of Progress Building called “Onondaga Lake: A Fresh Gateway to the New New York.”

Exhibits include some of the fish found in Onondaga Lake, like the primitive species called bowfin, or sometimes dogfish.

According to exhibit partner Onondaga County’s Save the Rain program, Onondaga Lake “now resembles other regional lakes with respect to: number of fish species present, the balance of the fish community, the extent of aquatic vegetation and summertime water clarity.”

Especially popular with fairgoers was the Bald Eagle provided by Onondaga Lake exhibit partner Montezuma Audubon Center.

More than 20 bald eagles have been seen at one time wintering near the shores of Onondaga Lake in recent years, as well as several resident eagles in other seasons.
