In 2010, Honeywell and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) agreed to a number of environmental and community projects within the Onondaga Lake watershed, including increasing public access for fishing along Nine Mile and Onondaga Creeks. Since then, the Onondaga County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs, the Onondaga County Fisheries Advisory Board, and the Nine Mile Creek Conservation Council have provided input on the design of the fishing access areas. The groups suggested ways to improve public access, enhance safety, and support fishing.
“Honeywell has continued to demonstrate its commitment to involving community leaders, environmental groups, sportsmen, fishing and wildlife enthusiasts, interested stakeholders, and citizens throughout the Onondaga Lake project,” said Stephen Wowelko, president of the Onondaga County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs. “We are excited that we were given the opportunity to provide input and suggestions that will be incorporated into the design of the new fishing access points along Nine Mile Creek and Onondaga Creek. These creeks offer great trout fishing and soon the community will have access to these areas.”
The Nine Mile Creek Conservation Council provided recommendations for the design of a multi-use dock that will be located at the Nine Mile Creek fishing access site. The new dock will provide a safe and easy point to launch or take out canoes and kayaks.
Both access points are expected to open in spring 2012. The Nine Mile Creek fishing access point will be located approximately one mile downstream of the Amboy Dam along Airport Road in Camillus and will be open for public access for a minimum of five years. Onondaga Creek’s access point will be located in the Tully Valley along Tully Farms Road, 1½ miles north of Route 80. It will be open for public access for approximately three years. These projects will be undertaken in connection with the settlement of an enforcement action taken by DEC.
