Eighty-three community members learned about the Onondaga Lake fishery at “Onondaga Lake: A Treasured Ecosystem Returning," a presentation by renowned Onondaga Lake fisheries expert Neil Ringler, Ph.D. Following the talk, participants went on a birding walk.

February 2018 - Eighty-three community members learned about the Onondaga Lake fishery at “Onondaga Lake: A Treasured Ecosystem Returning," a presentation by renowned Onondaga Lake fisheries expert Neil Ringler, Ph.D. Following the talk, participants went on a birding walk.

Neil Ringler, Vice Provost at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, is an avid fisherman and has studied the Onondaga Lake fishery for more than 30 years.

After the presentation, participants proceeded along the Onondaga Creekwalk to Onondaga Lake to spot birds and other wildlife.

Improvements at Onondaga Lake and nearby tributaries are providing restored habitat for fish, birds, invertebrates and plants.

More than 120 unique bird species have now been identified in and around Onondaga Lake, a priority Audubon Important Bird Area.

Participants were able to see a Bald Eagle and many migrating waterfowl on the lake after the recent ice thaw.
